D-I-E Task

Describe

When I was going to the store for the first time, I was checking out and then realized that the cashier hadn’t given me any bags to carry my items. I was very confused and asked for bags, and she pointed me under the register to the bags underneath, and then I had to pay for the bags to carry my items in. I was very confused because in the United States, the bags are free, and the cashier will put your items in the bag for you as part of their job.

Interpret

I thought about this situation and after a little bit, I was used to purchasing the bags before I check out, and understood that since the bags used are better quality than in America, they aren’t free. I think the way of life here is more environmentally friendly, and is trying to reduce the amount of plastic being used by encouraging people to bring their own bags to put their items in when shopping. Also, it is a good way to gauge what you will be able to buy, because if you are walking home, you can only carry so many bags. In America, you don’t think about your items in the terms of how many bags it will use, but rather in how much money it is. Here, you have to think of both of those things, and it can help you decide not to get something that you don’t really need because you might have to get another bag if you buy that item.

Evaluate

I think this is a positive thing, it helps the buyer protect the environment and also select their items more wisely. If I was the cashier in that situation I would realize that the buyer was foreign and be kind and understanding like she was to me.

  1. Thank you, Colin! Interesting situation and good D-I-E! Was there any cultural information you could use for the Evaluation? Btw: Have you noticed that there are different bags? White and balck. Do you know why they are different and how they are used for recycling?

  2. I think the culture is different because of their love for nature drives their want to recycle or be more conscious about their waste. This makes them want to use better bags that can be reused, and also to encourage shoppers to limit their plastic consumption.
