Describe
Last month, I went to the party held be Copsa at Kale, There were two Finnish boys stood in front of me while I was waiting for my turn to buy beer. When they turned back, I tried to say hi and smile with them but they seem not to want to talk, I thought they do not like chatting with strangers or foreigners. One hour later, they came and started the conversation with me which made me quite surprised. Actually, we taked for 15-20 minutes and it was really nice.
Interpret
They apologized for not saying hi back and explained that Finnish people are quite shy when talking in English. However, they feel more confident and comfortable to chat with foreigners when they drink beer or alcohol. They thought speaking English is not their strenght but they believe that the more they get drunk, the better their English is.
Evaluate
This is the cultural difference. Most Finnish do not get use to with small talks, especially with strangers and foreigners. When they get a little bit drunk, they are more opened and friendly. It was good to know that Finnish are not as cold as they seem.

ReplyDeleteIt's true that Finnish people are not always opened to strangers. But when you get to know them, they are not as cold as before.
