Describe:

Since I arrived in Kokkola, I met lot of Finnish. We spoke sometimes more than two hours, we laugh, we shared some experiences and spoke about the differences in our cultures. I though in myself, these people were nice, next time I will speak with them. Then, there are two different situations. First situation, these people pass in front of you and just say a little “Hi” and leave. Or second situation, they pass in front of you as if they don’t know you.

Interpret:

I think that there are two possibilities, Finnish people are shy and don’t speak too much with people they don’t know or because I am foreigner they don’t dare to come to speak.

Evaluate:

For me it’s so weird because in France, even if you don’t people yet, if you speak for two hours and share with them, when you meet them again you go to speak with. Some Finnish people come to speak each time we meet and some of them don’t come so it is not easy to evaluate why.

- Description:

It was the first week in Kokkola, we had just arrived after all the night in planes and waiting in airports around 9 in the morning. After I had left my stuff in the apartment, I went to visit the city with my Spanish friend, who came with me to study in Finland. Our goal was to try to find important things like a bicycle to move around Kokkola and things for the house. We were in the centre of the city and we saw few bicycles unlocked next to the shops, we were so surprised for that fact because in Spain it is so unusual to leave your bike without lock.

- Interpretation:

In Spain, you shouldn't let your bicycle unlocked because someone can (and will) steal it, sometimes even if you let your bike locked someone can take parts of the bicycle.

My first option to try to understand why they can let their bicycles unlocked is because they have trust in other people around them. In Kokkola there are less than 50.000 inhabitants and the city doesn't have a lot of immigrants, most of them are students in universities. This means that the people who live there are from Kokkola and they have been living there for a long time, which means they know each other or at least they know them for seeing them around.

My second option is thinking about the police, some Finnish people told me that the policemen are really strict and, like I said before, the city is little and they can control the bicycles rolling in the streets. So you don't want to have trouble with the police for a bike.

My last option is the economic point, my time in Finland and having a course like Finnish Society and Culture, made me learn that the government of Finland give a lot of help to students and young people and also the salaries in Finland are pretty high so the parents can buy bicycles for their children. It means that kids and young people, who are the most likely to steal a bike, they don't need to do it.

- Evaluation:

After that observation, I started to feel more confortable and safe in Kokkola, because in Spain I don't trust on unknown people and I wouldn't leave anything without being locked. After three months in Finland, I started to think like them and maybe I would leave my bicycle without lock if I need to buy something quickly in a store, because I would trust on other people or if my bike happened to be stolen I would trust on the police.

Two months ago, my girlfriend visited me. We fancied some walk to the beach at night, in order to take some pictures and mainly to enjoy a fresh air walk. It was enjoying, but it was also getting pretty cold. It was around 9 p.m. and on our way back, a Finnish drunk young man came by us, and was starting to speak Finnish. I apologized and told him that I only speak English. He stepped back a second, and apologized in his turn. He started to ask in English that he felt lonely, and was happy to meet some foreign people. Then, on his dash, he asked me if he could hug me. I was on a good mood this night, so I went along and cuddled him. He asked my girlfriend but she was laughing and refused. Thereafter he tried to make us stay, but we wanted to continue our way home.

It was really funny, but also very sad. I started asking myself how come people want a perfect stranger to fill their lack of affection.

The young man had obviously drunk enough so he couldn’t be able to prevent his impulses. You hardly take recoil in such a state, and just do what you would like to do. I still wonder if this act didn’t betray a lack of affection, or if he just wanted to hug my girlfriend, but had to pass me first. Maybe it gave me some more information on Finnish people, or maybe it just gave me information on him, I can’t define a people from only one of them.

Before I come to Finland, I got information about Finns and their culture from Internet. One of the most important characteristics of Finns attracting my attention is their trustworthiness. I had no idea but this made me happy.

Describe

I want to mention about my some experiences. When the weather is getting colder, everyone started to wear jacket, coats. When they come to university, they hang their jacket in the entrance of school. I was so surprised because we are doing this at our home. Then I observed little time then they just left their jacket and went to their courses comfortably. I told my friend that can you imagine that they can hang their jacket like their home.

Another day, I was preparing my presentation for chemistry course then I had to change my computer. I forgot to send my presentation to myself via e-mail. Then I changed my computer and noticed that I forgot to send after a couple hours. I was so scared because I thought that my presentation is deleted when I turn off the computer. I wanted to check then I went to computer room. I noticed that I forgot my hat over there and nobody did not take it my hat during couple hours. I was surprised and I saved my presentation, too. J

Interpret

I think that this is so common in Finland. You can lose your some stuff and you can find easily. In my country, it is difficult, because you can forget you stuff at school and you cannot find again. For example, if I hang my jacket in entrance of university, someone can take and go freely. I guess that also is related to Finland´s population. While the population of Finland is almost 5.5 million people, In Istanbul the population is almost 25 million. Hence, I cannot leave my jacket in entrance. Besides, we always forget our hat, pen etc. at university. We cannot find our stuff again. I´m sure that if my friends have this situation in foreign country, they will so surprised, too. It is not so common in Istanbul.   

According to my research, there are 3300 students at Centria University of Applied Science. 500 of these students are international students (degree and exchange ones). At my university there are almost 15000 students in only one campus. These numbers  make everything clear.

Evaluate

In the beginning, I was not leaving my jacket. Now, I can leave without any fair. I have already experienced this information. I noticed that this is truth. I’m glad to be in Finland. I can trust everyone without any doubt. I did not lose anything. Even if I lose, I’m sure that I will find it in where I left or lost.
